Why are we cold?

In winter, the feeling of cold is almost inevitable. But why does our body react this way? Today, my day deciphers the cold mechanisms and what is really happening in our body.

The mechanisms of the feeling of cold

The feeling of cold is essentially due to a difference between body temperature and the external environment.

When the outside temperature drops, our body reacts to preserve its heat. The more the gap between the body temperature (about 37 ° C) and that of the outside is important, the more heat we lose. To limit this loss, our organism reduces blood influx in the vessels under the skin, while contracting the muscles at the base of the hairs, which causes their recovery: this is what is called goosebumps .

Why are some people more cold?

Several factors influence the feeling of cold:

Fatigue and lack of energy : To maintain its temperature, the body uses the calories brought by food. However, if there is a lack of calories, the feeling of cold can appear more quickly.

Blood circulation problem : In some people with Raynaud's disease or syndrome, the feeling of cold, especially at the ends, can be felt very quickly and intensely.

Psychological factors : factors such as stress or anxiety can influence body temperature and cause a feeling of cold more quickly.

Age : Elderly people find it difficult to regulate their body temperature, making them more prone to the feeling of cold.

To avoid this unpleasant feeling, you must of course go out covered!
