How long can a baby keep his diaper?

One of the current concerns for new parents is how long their baby can keep their diaper without risking discomfort or irritation. Appropriate layer management is essential to ensure the comfort and health of your baby. In this article, we will examine how long a baby can stay with a layer, the signs indicating that it is time to change it, and some tips for good hygiene.

1. How long can we leave a layer?

The time during which a baby can keep a layer depends on several factors, including the age of the baby, the type of layer used (disposable or washable), and if it is a wet or soiled layer.

  • For newborns: Newborns tend to urinate frequently, up to 20 times a day, and to make several stools per day. It is recommended to check the layer every 2 to 3 hours and to change it immediately if it is soiled. A wet layer can be tolerated a little longer, but should be changed regularly to avoid irritation.

  • For older babies (2-6 months): At this age, babies are still frequently urinated, but the number of stools can decrease. You can check the layer every 3 to 4 hours, but change it immediately if it is soiled. During the night, if the baby sleeps deeply, a wet layer can generally be tolerated up to 6 to 8 hours if designed for a long time.

  • For babies over 6 months old: From 6 months, babies start to have more regular habits in stools and can sometimes spend a full night without changing layers. During the day, it is always advisable to check every 4 hours approximately, and to change it as soon as it is soiled.

2. Why is it important to frequently change diapers?

Frequently changing your baby's layer is crucial to avoid irritation, gluteal erythema, and infections. When urine and stools remain in prolonged contact with the skin, they can cause redness, irritation, and even painful rashes.

  • Avoid gluteal erythema: The humidity and acidity of the stool can irritate baby's sensitive skin. Changing it quickly after a saddle reduces this risk.

  • Prevent infections: The bacteria present in the stool can cause infections if they are not quickly eliminated. This is why it is particularly important to change a soiled layer as soon as possible.

  • Ensure baby comfort: A baby with a clean layer is a happier and more comfortable baby. A regular change in layers helps prevent discomfort and keep baby dry and comfortable.

3. When should you change the layer immediately?

There are situations where you have to change the layer immediately, whatever the time:

  • After each saddle: Regardless of your baby's age, a soiled layer should be changed immediately to avoid any irritation.

  • Before and after bedtime: Change your baby's layer just before putting it in bed and after waking up so that it stays dry overnight.

  • Before going out: If you plan to go out, make sure your baby has a clean layer to avoid discomfort during your trips.

4. Some tips for good diapers

  • Use quality layers: Opt for layers that offer good absorption and are soft for the skin. Disposable nights are designed to hold longer, which can be useful for sleep periods.

  • Always have spare layers at hand: Whether you are at home or on the go, make sure you have enough diapers, as well as wipes and a protective cream.

  • Watch signs of irritation: If you notice redness, rashes, or if your baby seems uncomfortable, change the layer more frequently and apply a specific cream to prevent or treat gluteal erythema.

  • Clean the baby's seat: Opt for our Liniment Oléo-limestone To gently clean the baby buttocks.
