Can I put perfume on my baby?

Perfume & baby: pay attention to the composition

Babies' skin is particularly thin and immature. Their epidermis is about five times thinner than that of an adult, with a skin barrier that is still developing. This means it is less protective and allows external substances to pass through more easily.

Thus, conventional perfumes, often formulated with alcohol, essential oils, and allergenic fragrance compounds (such as linalool, limonene, or geraniol), present high risks of skin irritation, dryness, and allergic reactions. These ingredients are also classified as potentially sensitizing by the European Cosmetic Regulation (EC No. 1223/2009).

Health authorities, such as the ANSM or the European Commission, therefore recommend avoiding all cosmetics containing allergenic fragrance substances in children under three years of age, unless specifically formulated.
