Breastfeeding and skin care: preventing and treating discomfort
Breastfeeding is a precious time. But it can also be a source of discomfort, especially in the first few weeks: irritated skin, chapping, burning sensations, etc.
The skin of the nipple and areola is extremely thin and subject to repeated friction. It is therefore essential to take gentle care of this area to breastfeed peacefully and painlessly.
The most common skin problems during breastfeeding
Cracked nipples
This is one of the most common discomforts in early breastfeeding. It can be caused by poor baby positioning or excessive sucking. A poorly treated crack can quickly become infected or make it difficult to latch on.
Irritations, redness and heating
Because skin is constantly stressed, it can become dry, red, or painful, especially with frequent feedings or friction from nursing pads. It's important to keep the area well ventilated and use gentle, restorative skincare products.
Itchy or peeling skin
A reaction to cold, moisture, or milk residue can cause tightness or peeling around the areola. This can be exacerbated if the skin is already sensitized or dehydrated.
If the pain is severe or persistent, or if you suspect an infection (such as candidiasis or engorgement), consult a lactation consultant or midwife.
What natural products should I use to soothe and repair?
To soothe the skin during breastfeeding, we recommend:
Care without perfume or harsh preservatives, compatible with breastfeeding.
Soft textures that leave a protective film.
Our natural essentials:
Ultra pure lanolin (medical grade) : classic and effective, it forms a protective film.
Organic olive oil or coconut oil : soothe and nourish the skin between feedings.
Calendula macerate : known for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties.
Pure aloe vera gel : for gentle hydration.
And at Monjour, we've formulated a postpartum oil-in-jelly designed for the specific needs of breastfeeding women. Its melting texture envelops the skin without sticking, and its minimalist composition is suitable for sensitive skin:
Organic camelina: rich in omega 3, it calms inflammation and promotes repair.
Inca Inchi Oil: nourishing, it protects the skin barrier and supports regeneration.
Carrot extract: provides soothing and antioxidant properties, while illuminating the skin.
Simply apply a small amount between the breasts to restore comfort and suppleness. It is important to dry the nipple thoroughly with a clean cloth before breastfeeding to ensure your baby's safety.
At Monjour, we favor treatments without essential oils, suitable for sensitive skin and new mothers.
